The organisation was established in 1993 with a group of 12 grant makers and now consists of over 58 members throughout Scotland. Representatives of our member organisations meet on a regular basis to discuss issues of common concern and to share information.
Scottish Grantmakers’ charitable purposes are the promotion of the voluntary sector and the effectiveness or efficiency of charities, by:
Fostering and informing good practice in the administration, governance and leadership of trusts and foundations which are grantmakers in Scotland.
Affording opportunities to members for discussion, liaison, collaboration, education and networking.
Engaging in projects and activities designed to enhance and promote the foregoing purposes.
Role Description:
We are looking for someone with a range of skills and the enthusiasm to make a meaningful difference to our organisation. In particular, we are seeking a Treasurer, so if you have experience in finance, financial planning, budgeting, or accounting, we would be delighted to hear from you.
This position provides valuable exposure to charity governance, including how boards operate and how directors offer strategic financial oversight.
The role is suitable for both first-time and experienced trustees, and we welcome applications from senior as well as junior professionals who see this as an opportunity to develop their skills and gain board-level experience.
With comprehensive accounting, governance, and administrative support provided by the WS Society, the Treasurer’s responsibilities focus primarily on financial oversight rather than day to day financial or operational management.
Essential Criteria:
Must be a member of Scottish Grantmakers.
Ability to interpret financial statements and communicate financial information.
High level of integrity, professionalism, and sound judgement.
Willingness to contribute actively to board discussions and decision‑making.
Desirable Criteria:
Qualifications in Finance, Accounting, or related fields.
Experience working with or within the charity or nonprofit sector.
Knowledge of governance, best practice, and risk management.
Interest in developing and supporting the community of Scottish Grantmakers.
Further Details:
Role type - Voluntary; reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.
Time commitment - Average of 1 hour per week.
Term length - Minimum 2-year term.
Based - Remote or hybrid. Attendance at in‑person Scottish Grantmakers events is expected (~2 per annum), with the option to join bi-monthly trustee meetings in person.
Next Steps:
If you’re excited to combine your financial skills with a passion for charitable grantmaking, we’d be delighted to hear from you.
Equally, if you are an employee at one of our member organisations and can recommend someone from within your organisation, we would greatly appreciate it if you could either let us know or direct them to this advert.
