Much discussion of charitable giving and philanthropy focuses either on typical donors (giving around £26/month on average) or major donors giving £1M plus who can easily justify the creation of new charitable foundations. But what about the role of smaller foundations set up by donors on modest levels of income whose income comes mainly from normal donor salaries rather than major endowments - can they make a significant contribution?

Drawing on the experience of SGM-member The Paristamen Charity (which was set up in set up in 1985 and has been operating for 40+ years but is now coming to the end of its life) this workshop will explore whether there is a case for encouraging middle-income donors to establish family foundations as a spur to increased levels of philanthropy?

Speaker: Professor Gareth Morgan has been Chair of Trustees of The Paristamen Charity since it was founded.  He is also a former adviser to several other grantmaking charities and is Emeritus Professor of Charity Studies at Sheffield Hallam University but is now based in East Lothian.
